WHAT IS
THE NATIONAL MINE MAP REPOSITORY The National Mine Map Repository (NMMR) is part of the United States Department of the Interior, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM). OSM maintains two mine map repositories, one in Green Tree, Pennsylvania, which collects and maintains mine map information and images for the entire country; and one in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, which maintains maps of coal mines in the anthracite coal region of northeastern Pennsylvania. The Green Tree facility provides and stores, in microfilm, over 134,000 abandoned mine maps. This repository contains maps from the 1860s to the present day. It serves as a point of reference for mine maps and other information for both surface and underground mines throughout the United States. It also serves as a location to retrieve mine maps in an emergency. The NMMR provides our customers with services ranging from evaluating related data for economic analysis to assessing their potential risk associated with underground mining. Through our analysis of mine maps and related information, we assist both the private and public sectors in industrial and commercial development, highway construction, and the preservation of public health, safety and welfare. In addition, we collect, reproduce, and maintain a national inventory of mine maps and supporting documentation for private and public interests. The contacts, office locations, and telephone numbers for the repositories are:
Notice: Mine maps within the National Mine Map Repository are not guaranteed to be accurate, correct or complete. These maps have been donated to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement from various sources and the mines, streets, surface features and coal elevations cannot be verified. OSM does not warrant the accuracy of the mine maps within the NMMR, or the reliability of findings based upon data from the maps or from digital mapping programs. |
