THE NATIONAL MINE MAP REPOSITORY The NMMR acquires maps through a vigorous outreach program directed at the public and state and federal environmental agencies. Other sources include: mining companies, engineering and consulting firms, surveying companies, universities, and private citizens. We are always looking for donations of mine maps to add to our microfilm/digital collection. If you have mine maps you would like to donate see the contact information below. When maps are received from a donor they are scanned and converted to microfilm, and placed in the archive. The maps, along with a scanned images are returned to the donor. Please don't hesitate to contact the Repository if you have any questions or wish additional information. NMMR Procedures: As maps are obtained at the Repository, they are sorted by mine and map size and a unique six-digit identification number (document number) is stamped on each map. Data sheets are prepared for each map giving all available information including: map document number; state; county; mine name; mine ID number (MSHA); company name; mine type; and the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid zone, and the latitude and longitude of the geo-located point on the map. This information is input into the Mine Map Index System. The sorted maps are then scanned into a digital format and stored on the Repository's dedicated 42 terabyte mass storage array. The digital files are converted to microfilm for archival. The contacts, office locations, and telephone numbers for the repositories are:
