Big Stone Gap OfficeAs delegated by the United States Secretary of the Interior, the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy; Division of Mined Land Reclamation is the regulatory authority for the coal surface mining regulatory and abandoned mine land reclamation programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Big Stone Gap Field Office maintains an oversight responsibility for the Virginia coal regulatory and abandoned mine land programs under the delegation process. The Virginia regulatory and abandoned mine land programs ensure that surface coal mining operations, including the surface effects of underground coal mining operations, and the reclamation of abandoned mine lands (mining operations conducted prior to December 15, 1981) are conducted in accordance with the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. The Big Stone Gap Field Office prepares an annual evaluation report on these programs and the 2003 Virginia Annual Oversight Report for the period of October 1, 2002, to September 30, 2003, is available online or a printed copy is available from the office. |
