The Knoxville Field Office (KFO), as the Regulatory Authority in Tennessee, is responsible for the following Federal Program/Federal Lands Activities:

 

  • Permitting actions in Tennessee and North Carolina and on Federal Lands, including Federal coal, in coal-producing states in the Appalachian Region that do not have Federal-State Cooperative agreements;
  • Review of Land Unsuitable for Mining petitions and administration of the KFO Technical Information Systems (TIPS), the Small Operator Assistance Program (SOAP), the Federal Blaster Certification Program and the Bond Forfeiture Reclamation Program;
  • Inspection of Federal Program sites in Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia;
  • Evaluation of performance bond documents and review of bond release application;
  • Administration of the civil penalty and assessment conference programs;
  • Preparation of Applicant Violator System (AVS) findings for Tennessee Federal Program and Federal Lands applicants;
  • Participation in the Appalachian Clean Streams Initiative (ACSI) relative to Tennessee projects; and
  • Performance of administrative functions required to operate the KFO and to assist other offices.
